While the traditional history of the diamond might’ve been enough for our parents and grandparents, most millennials are looking for something more meaningful; they want something that truly symbolizes the story of their relationship. And this has created a unique market! Take a look at five of these unique options for the stylish millennials:
Millennials like to capture and share their engagement, often via social media. Having a ring that has history allows the couples’ story to be even more unique and special. Choosing a vintage ring is a great way to achieve this goal!
While you might not always know the where the ring came from or who wore it down the aisle once before, you’re still able to dream up something fantastical. Not to mention, these rings have stood the test of time and can be seen as recycled – which is a big check yes for many eco-friendly millennials. So, don’t shy away from a little something borrowed!
The purity that the frosty brilliance of a diamond once represented isn’t quite as important for today’s modern families. We now see millennials reach for colored gemstones, like sapphire (Hello, something blue!), ruby or emerald. This departure from the typical diamond allows them to tie in something specific from their relationship. The stone could symbolize their favorite shade, an eye color or a favorite sports team’s color, or they’re simply looking for a piece that’ll be seriously eye-catching!
Right hand rings have earned their keep and are officially acceptable to wear as a lefty! More commonly known as costume jewelry, intricate and oftentimes ostentatious engagement rings offer a glamorous option for those looking to make a statement. These rings tend to have playful elements, such as moons and stars, or even a more architectural feel to it. It’s also more fun for the designer, as we get to have more freedom and flexibility to work with when creating rings for the younger generation.
One reason millennials are rejecting traditional engagement rings is that fact that they are also rejecting typical marital roles. Both partners are often working, and not just as a parent. Traditional engagement rings can get in the way of work and be cumbersome to the wearer. A good way around this is to wear only a band or two. Stackable bands can still provide a similar statement and flare that an engagement ring would, but also provide more comfort and flexibility!
For those that still want to go the diamond route, millennials are often opting for a bigger setting that prior generations. Floral motifs and decadent halos are accenting larger diamond center stones. Often, we will see mixed metals or rose gold, departing from the classic yellow gold or platinum bands. Plus, millennials that wait a little longer to get engaged often have a higher budget, and are able to spring for these opulent engagement rings.

]]>You can never go wrong with a classic. And, with a traditional, polished gold ring with a smooth edge for a comfortable fit, your fiancé will look timeless as you walk off into happily ever after.
It’s the simple things that can really make a life together wonderful! And, the same goes for jewelry. High-polish, matte, hammered, florentine and more – opt for a finish that will suit your man’s style. This is a super easy way to add a personal touch without making too much of a statement.
There is no shame in mixing metals! In fact, it’s smiled upon because it can take a traditional band from drab to fab. If your guy isn’t afraid to make a statement, mix different golds for a fun feature.
More traditional wedding bands for men don’t have a lot of features. But, there are slight details that can make them stand out from the masses. A beveled edge is one of them! Rather than being curved for a softer look, a beveled edge presents a very strong and modern appearance and allows to mixing different finishes.
Who said your man can’t have a little bling? Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but a little bit of brilliant detailing can be just what your fashionable fiancé needs. Whether it’s a simple, vertical diamond trio, or a single centerpiece embedded in the band, diamonds can be a very handsome choice.
Gemstones for men are already a little untraditional. But, take it to the next level with a black diamond band. This is a bold choice that makes the piece all the more special. Needless to say, you won’t be the only one showing off your left hand.
While it may be convenient, you don’t just have to engrave your wedding date on a band for future reference. Engravings can come in all forms, and can offer understated detail that allows a ring to be special without being ostentatious.
There are so many options out there for guys nowadays. While gold is traditional, modern metals and materials include tungsten, palladium, damascus steel, and wood. This way, you can make sure you’re working with the material that best exudes his lifestyle and personal style.
Your wedding day will always hold a unique place in your heart. Let the accessories reflect that. A custom ring allows you to create a one-of-a-kind piece, from the metal to the details. This allows it to embody your relationship perfectly.
]]>Don’t fit the mold? A custom ring is just what the gemologist ordered! Design one for your special day.
We all can appreciate a beautiful stud. But, if you’re craving a little extra “oomf” without the commitment of an entirely new earring, an earring jacket (seen left) is the way to go! This sweet little piece rests between the back of your earlobe and a stud backing. Then, you get a complementing, minimalist design in front. And, the best part is that you can mix and match earrings and jackets for any style.
First came mixing nail polish colors, then came mixing metal, now comes mixing earrings! If you’re looking for a way to make a statement that can be chic and simple or bold and boujee, this is for you. Try wearing one small stud and then a larger one. Or, a boho-inspired jacket with a chandelier earring! The possibilities are endless.
While fashion is slowly waning away from the minimalist look, it still runs strong. Huggies (seen right) can give you a little bit of frost for a daily wear. The understated pieces are small hoops that hug tight to the ear – hence the name! They can offer you the slightest hint of clean metal or catch the light with a careful embezzlement of brilliant gemstones.
Draw the eye upwards with a dainty statement piece encasing your helix. Why? Because it’s cool. The ear cuff (seen left) has a je ne sais quois that allows for the ultimate French girl cool without the commitment.

]]>Akin to the style of Hollywood, Grace Kelly’s engagement ring was a classic beauty. However, she went through two engagement rings. The first was a diamond and ruby eternity band. But, Prince Rainier III felt it didn’t suit her. He then presented her with an emerald-cut diamond bordered with two baguettes and weighed just over 10 carats.
This was one of many engagement gifts from Prince Rainier III. Since Grace would not be inheriting a grand collection of jewels, he took it upon himself to begin building her collection. According to various reports, this diamond necklace (pictured with the Bains de Mer Tiara below) weighs anywhere from 58 to 64 carats.
Princess Grace was known for her decadent hair decor. A wedding gift to Grace from the Société des Bains de Mer, the tiara was made by Cartier and featured three detachable brooches. With 49 carats of ruby and complementing diamonds, this was a classic gemstone duo and represented the colors of Monaco. (Tiara and 3-strand diamond necklace pictured left.)
Yet another gift from Prince Rainier III, Princess Grace was present with a Van Cleef & Arpels set. Made of pearls and diamonds, the set included a necklace, bracelet and earrings. Van Cleef was a favorite of the Princess and made a regular appearance in her wardrobe.

Twinkling gemstones under perfect lining is what’s made us swoon over glass cases for decades. But, following suit of a “greener” and more natural generation, “raw” or “mineral” jewelry is what many are showing off these days.
From diamonds to lesser known crystals, the unrefined aesthetic of raw jewelry offers wearers an ethereal vibe. There is something more wild about a stone that hasn’t been perfectly cut or tumbled or shined, making it a fitting look for explorers to stay grounded and true to their roots.
But not all stones are great for beading and jewelry purposes. So, which ones should you keep your eyes peeled for?
Quartz is a specific type of mineral that gives a crystalline structure.
Lastly, raw diamonds are perhaps even more stunning than the ones found in our favorite jewelry stores. Offering an organic take on such a strong symbol of love and commitment, a raw diamond can manifest so much meaning. That makes it an amazing alternative engagement ring for the girl with wanderlust and would love to share the world with someone special.
Opal, clear crystal quartz, rose quartz, peridot and more can become gorgeous raw pieces. But, whether or not you prefer a manicured gem or one that’s come in such a natural form, they’re all such a precious gift from our earth.
From Princess Diana’s engagement ring to brooches handed down over the past the century, Kate is well-versed in the family jewels. But, that hasn’t stopped her from making a statement of her very own. Take a look at how the Duchess is keeping royal standards high while making jewelry her own:
It’s no secret that blue is a hue of royalty. So, it’s no wonder why Diana – and now Kate – have been seen wearing it so much. Aside from the famous blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring, Kate has worn blue sapphire and diamond drop earrings.
Many believe that she was gifted Diana’s earrings, then chose to give them her own special touch. The diamond stud carries the diamond-enclosed sapphire and has a similar feel to the “front-back” earring trend where a stud is backed by a jacket that can be swapped out. This is the perfect showcase of Kate’s liking of simple yet meaningful fashion.
Just because Kate loves a simple style, doesn’t mean she can’t have fun, and Kiki McDonough seems to be her go-to designer for something a little more playful. These striking blue topaz earrings are undoubtedly meant for royalty, but still offer a youthfulness with their light color, open-circle shape and variety in gem size. Kate sparkles just as much as the earrings themselves. How could one not in something so lavish?
In addition to her blue topaz earrings, Kate has been seen donning Kiki McDonough’s blue topaz and peridot oval earrings which once again offer a fun flair to her otherwise conservative look.
The olive tone of the peridot offers a nice compliment to Kate’s skin tone while bringing in a splash of color. Paired with the blue topaz and topped with diamonds, this multi-colored accessory – set in a more traditional yellow gold – has the perfect balance between young and mature.
While princesses may be known for their tiaras, Kate often goes for something a little more casual, but still reminiscent of the traditional accessory. This ruby and diamond Mouawad necklace is a perfect example of playful sophistication.
The bright red and floral shape makes the piece youthful while the classic diamonds keep it fit for royalty. The open circle, diamond chain also allows this piece to be rich in style but light in design. Believed to be a wedding gift, this necklace has a matching bracelet, and complements Kate’s complexion perfectly.
]]>If you were Kate, which royal piece would be your go-to?
Have you ever had a moment when glancing over your outfit and you just feel like it could use a little extra? Well, in between your manicured fingernail and your multi-toned bracelets, come rings – specifically, the midi ring.
For an added hint of chicness, the midi ring – which rests right between your middle and lower knuckles – is the ultimate accessory.
Seen commonly on celebrities and the boho babes of Instagram, midi rings offer daintiness and simplicity to every ensemble. And the best part is that you can find them to suit any style or budget.
For a laidback summer outfit, you can accessorize with a single gold ring on your pointer finger. For an edgier look, a smoky quartz midi stacked with others that feature a bit of texture can really add grit and glamour. And for a softer look, you could mix rose gold stackables with a bit of sparkle.
Thin rings are typically the most common as they are understated and easy to stack. But, it’s not unusual to find more ornate midi pieces. It’s easiest to choose a “theme” when stacking to maintain cohesion without being too matchy-matchy. This may mean you stick to one designer, a single metal or stone.
Just keep in mind, that no matter how you chose to stack your rings, you can always add to your collection! Swapping them out on a regular basis makes it fun and shows how your style evolves.

]]>Let’s be honest with ourselves – we love our jewelry because it sparkles and dazzles, decorating our hands, wrists and necklines in the best way possible.
But, pollutants and lotions can leave our pieces looking less than fabulous. Luckily, there are some kitchen essentials that can leave jewelry looking as though it’s fresh out of the case.
NOTE: Silver should not soak, as that will only speed up the tarnishing process.
Give your gold a good cleaning by letting it bathe in a mixture of dish soap and seltzer water. The combination will clear debris that can get trapped on the underside of a piece of jewelry. For a deeper scrub, take an unused toothbrush and gently run over the item to break up anymore stubborn grime.
You don't need to spend a lot of money on vodka that will clean you're jewelry. The cheap stuff will do!

Precious stones and metals are things most of us admire, but for many it’s hard to even tell what’s real and what’s not. And with more jeweler options than your typical Kay or Jared nowadays, it’s more likely to get caught wearing something less than brilliant.
So, how can you ensure that you’re getting the best of the best? Here are some questions to ask before buying:
When it comes to jewelry, a lot of the time, you can judge a book by its cover. If the stones are cloudy or have minimal brilliance (brightness) to them, there’s a possibility they’re not real. Also, check the links and prongs. If the links in a bracelet or necklace are pinching and the prongs don’t seem to be flush to what they’re holding, you may be out of luck. This should only be your first assessment though, as some fake jewelry could fool a trained eye at first glance.
No, we’re not looking for your run-of-the-mill card store. Instead, we’re looking for something much more precious – precious metals, to be exact.
The United States may not have an official hallmarking system, but if you’re buying from other countries or antiques, a hallmark is an official mark stamped onto a piece of platinum, gold, silver or sometimes palladium. This is to show that it is in fact legitimate.
In the States though, you will find a mark of the precious metal percentage – 14k (58.3% gold), 18k (75% gold), PT950 (95% platinum), 925 (sterling silver). This can be replicated in fakes, and is sometimes stamped onto gold plated jewelry, so don’t let it be your deciding factor.
This is another super simple test to start you in the right direction when on the hunt for real silver or gold. Neither are magnetic, so if you hold a magnet and it reacts, it’s not what you’re looking for. However, this is just the first step, as not all fake jewelry is made with magnetic material.
Believe it not, you’re wanting to find a few flaws in your jewelry. These “flaws”, known as inclusions to gemologists and jewelers, are little irregularities within a stone and are typically caused by environmental factors.
But don’t worry – inclusions don’t ruin your stone. Inclusions can add personality and intrigue to what is already a completely unique piece. In fact, stones with inclusions in them are sometimes valued higher.
Take amber – a resin that sometimes traps insects – for example. Overall, if you’re looking at a piece of jewelry that is seemingly flawless, you may want to take a closer look.
So, you’ve gone away on a cruise, and a nice gentleman in Cozumel wants to sell you some pearls. Different from gemstones, you have less to go on when getting an idea of a pearl’s quality. The quickest and easiest way to know if a pearl is authentic is to bite it. Yes, bite it.
All you need to do is hold it with the tips of your fingers and run it across your teeth. A real pearl will be a little gritty.
It’s as easy as running to the mall and asking someone to take a closer look.
Make sure you’re asking a certified gemologist for their input, as many sales associates at even the largest jewelry chains have little real knowledge of gems and jewelry.
There’s been one too many times that I’ve been misinformed by a jewelry store sales associate. Typically written appraisals cost $100-$200, but most gemologists are happy to give you their verbal acknowledgements for free, and many of them will go on for hours happily about gems.

Pearls are a natural gem and are very porous. This means that they absorb the oils and chemicals that contact them on your body. Hairspray and perfume are not good for your pearls either! If you follow this first rule when getting ready, your pearls will thank you. Make your pearls the last piece of jewelry you put on and the first thing you take off. Even limiting the wear time just a little bit can help pearls last for a lifetime.
At the end of every wear, you should gently wipe off your pearls to remove any oils from your body. When wanting a deeper clean, you need to be extremely cautious about what goes on them. Acidic ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and window cleaner are way too harsh for this organic gemstone.
Instead wipe down with distilled water – as tap may carry too many chemicals – or a cleaner specific for pearls that can be recommended by your jeweler. Also, never let your pearls soak. Eventually, this can break down the outer layers of the gem and leave it looking anything but pristine.
Did you know pearls are a June birthstone? Learn more about them and don’t forget to pick up a little something for your favorite June baby!
In the same way that pearls are sensitive to chemicals, their surfaces are also sensitive to aggravation. When wiping down your pearls, use a soft cloth like microfiber or simply a cotton pad, to avoid scratching their beautiful nacre coating.
Obviously, pearls are delicate, and there is a decent amount of protocol to follow when wearing them. But, what about when you take them off? After gently wiping them down with a soft, slightly moistened cloth, store them separately from your other jewelry.
Hard gemstones and metals are able to scratch your pearls if they come in contact, so it’s best to lay your pearls out in a different compartment. When traveling, be sure to store them in a silk or velvet pouch.
But, no matter what, don’t be afraid to wear your pearls! They are a stunning creation of nature and deserve to be shown off. Just be sure to show them some TLC when you get home.
]]>And, truthfully, it speaks to our culture. In an era where self expression is of the utmost importance, jewelry has followed suit with each metal tone speaking to a different facets of the person who wears them.
While yellow gold speaks to the more traditional, it can be transformed to be regal and elegant or authentic and earthy. Lighter metals, like silver and white gold, speak to the modern minimalist who wants something timeless. And lastly, fashion pieces made of feminine tones like rose gold and copper are suited for the non-traditional who sometimes want to make a statement, no matter how simple or bold.
When mixed together, the wearer gets to tell a story. They show their fun side with a dainty rose gold stackable ring, and their more conservative side with ruby earrings backed in yellow gold. And that’s what makes jewelry fun.So, how can you start mixing your metals?
Pick your piece. Rings, bracelets and necklaces are easily stackable. You can add as many as you want and together the different colors and variations make for a fun, personalized visual.
Begin with your base. Choose a metal that is your absolute favorite and begin building with a timeless piece.
Add some flair. Maybe you’re going for the minimalist look, with your base being a simple white gold diamond band. Stack a smaller, rose gold band on top of it for a nice bit of frosting and a subtle contrast.
Give it some contrast. If you’ve stayed conservative, now is the time to add something out of left field. Bring in some yellow gold for warmth. You can even find something with a little texture – maybe a soft wave in the brand, or braided.
Keep building. You can always take off pieces when there are too many, and you can always swap. Eventually you’ll find a combination that suits your lifestyle, personality and has a nice balance to it. If you create a jewelry collection in which every piece is interchangeable and stackable, you can create many different looks with just a few pieces of jewelry.
Just remember: In fashion, there are a lot of rules, but rules are meant to be broken! So, don’t discriminate and have fun mixing and matching your metals.

One of our FAVORITE jewelry accessories are brooches and pins. These sparkly accessories can become a collector and fashionista's addiction because there are so many ways to show them off, and they function as a great utility to pin up the perfect outfit!
1. THE BROOCH JACKET. Whether its suede, leather, fur, or polyester, this is one of our favorite MUST-haves in the closet. FROM THE EDITOR: My favorite style is what I like to call "Minimalist Treasures." I love to compose all of my outfits out of a few simple items, worn different ways, with different pieces of jewelry. It follows the logic of minimalist fashion, but rather than spending money on clothing which has a short shelf-life, I spend my money on a few pieces of REAL jewelry. It's amazing how much a simple accessory can add to your style, and it's great knowing jewelry holds its value, so if I ever DO get sick of it, I can sell it or trade it in for a new piece
